Rec Soccer Rules: A Quick Overview

Instructional/ First Grade:

  • No Games in the fall, only in the spring.
  • Coaches are allowed on the field coaching for the entire game
  • Games are played with a Size 4 ball.
  • Game Times: Four 10-minute Quarters. Each quarter starts with a kickoff.
  • One referee to be assigned per game.
  • 7 v. 7 Small Sided Teams (desired maximum of 10 players per team).

Second and Third Grades:

  • Game Time: Four 10-minute quarters. Each quarter starts with a kick-off.
  • Substitution: Grades 2 and 3 may only substitute at the quarter breaks.
  • Games are played with a Size 4 ball.
  • 7 v. 7 Small Sided Teams (desired maximum of 10 players per team).
  • Each player must play at least half of each game unless exceptions have been cleared prior to the game.
  • Two referees to be assigned for Small Sided.

Fourth and Fifth Grades:

  • Game Time: Two 25-minute halves.
  • Substitution is from the centerline on any throw in or goal kick.
  • Games are played with a Size 4 ball.
  • 8 v. 8 (desired maximum of 14 players per team).
  • Each player must play at least half of each game unless exceptions have been cleared prior to the game.
  • Three referees to be assigned for Large Sided.

Sixth through Eight Grades:

  • Game Time: Two 30-minute halves.
  • Substitution is from the centerline on any throw in or goal kick.
  • Games are played with a Size 5 ball.
  • 8 v. 8 (desired maximum of 14 players per team).
  • Each player must play at least half of each game unless exceptions have been cleared prior to the game.
  • Three referees to be assigned for Large Sided.

Special rules for all grades:

  • Players with rigid casts or splints will not be allowed to play.
  • Instinctive protection of oneself should not be considered a handball.
  • Coaching will be confined to the team side and team half of the field between mid-field line and penalty area, with parents on the opposite side of the field. At no time is a spectator or coach to be located on or behind the goal line.
  • If a player wishes to register in a community other than their home community, the player must register as an individual. The player will then be added to the player pool of that community and will be subject to the team formation procedures of that community.
